How to Apply

Application for a graduate program within the Department of Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Sciences is through the School of Graduate Studies.

Before an applicant can be admitted as a matriculated students, a qualified ADVS faculty member must agree to serve as his/her major (supervisory) professor. The major professor must be a faculty member within ADVS, working within the applicant's academic area, and approved by the School of Graduate Studies to serve as an MS or PhD major professor.

Requirements

An applicant must meet the minimum standard as set forth by the School of Graduate Studies to be admitted into a graduate program in ADVS:
  • Have the requisite degree for your intended program by the time you are matriculated.*
  • 3.0 or higher GPA on your last 60 semester or 90 quarter credits.
  • Score at or above the 40th percentile on appropriate admissions test
  • Completion of a BS undergraduate program similar to the Science Core of the ADVS BS degree.**
Applicants can be admitted into a departmental PhD program without an MS degree. Students in this category are held to a higher standard, needing a GPA of at least a 3.5 and a GRE or 50 percent of higher in both verbal and quantitative.

International Students

International students from non-English speaking countries must meet a minimum score on the TOEFL examination as set by the School of Graduate Studies.

Applicants who fail to achieve this score are required to take the English Language Placement Test given by the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI)*** at USU. International students can only be admitted as matriculated students; matriculated-provisional status may not be used.

*Matriculation is based upon the recommendation of the ADVS Graduate Programs Committee (GPC). The GPC bases its decisions on multiple factors such as GPA, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, student's application essay, if a major professor has been identified, and whether the applicant's interests fit within the scope of specializations offered for the MS and PhD degrees in ADVS.
**Applicants with deficiencies in the science areas may be admitted to the graduate program subject to the completion of remedial coursework specified by the graduate programs committee and the department head. The student's supervisory committee may specify other preparatory courses.
***Passing the IELI does not guarantee admittance into an ADVS MD or PhD program.
